Sport BraS 101: 4 expert fit tips

The majority of us don’t think twice about the bra we exercise in, myself included. For me it was because I didn’t know how to choose the right one or understand that no matter how cute or trendy that bra may be, bad fit is not good match.

Enter Dawn Kenney, National Fit Consultant Manager at Wacoal. In case you didn’t know, Wacoal has over 80 trained bra fit consultants in department stores all across the country. Their main goal is to get women everywhere in the right size bra for their shape and lifestyle (80% are wearing the wrong size so needless to say the work they do is important). She gave me the rundown on what’s important when it comes to a proper fitting sport bra.  Here are her 4 tips every woman should know:

1. BE WEARY OF PULLOVER BRAS
 While they are perfectly fine for low impact activities (walking, yoga), a sport bra with more structure will benefit you in the long run. Opt for a bra with adjustable straps, which helps you customize your fit. 2. YOUR SPORT BRA HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE
Like any other piece of clothing, your sport bra has an expiration date.  There are two rules of thumb to figuring out just when that date is:
Strap support - If you notice over time you’re constantly adjusting the straps or band, that’s a clear sign they have stretched out and it’s time for a new bra.
Basic mathematics - 
Your sports bra has the same shelf life as a regular bra, which is equivalent to approximately 100 wears and washes. If you’re working out 4 times a week, about every 6 months it’s time to get out with the old, in with the new.   

3. THE DRESSING ROOM TEST
There is a quick and easy test you can do in the dressing room to figure out if your bra is supporting you correctly. Place your index finger under the band of the bra, right underneath your armpit. You shouldn’t be able to pull it more than one inch away.  If you can, it’s too big.  You can also stretch your arms up- as high as you can reach. If you can see under boob, you’re in the wrong size.

4. MAKE YOUR SPORT BRA LAST
Once you find the sport bra that fits you like a glove and you feel good exercising in- take care of it and make it last. Hand wash bras in cold water and avoid any fabric softener or bleach that can compromise the fabric.  Dry flat or line dry- no drying machines!
